Mel Lacelle

Digital Engagement Coordinator for the IPCA Knowledge Basket

Mel, a passionate advocate for sustainability, land, animals, and our interconnectedness, joins the IPCA Knowledge Basket as the Digital Engagement Coordinator for the IISAAK OLAM Foundation. Born and raised in Guelph, Ontario, on the treaty lands and territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, Mel’s curiosity about life and desire to seek her own answers has been a driving force throughout her journey.

Following her graduation from College with a degree in Business Administration & Marketing, Mel set out on a journey to expand her knowledge and understanding. Fueling her dreams of becoming an entrepreneur and her dedication to organic gardening and sustainable living, she set off on a three-year adventure worldwide. Living and volunteering across Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America, Mel absorbed wisdom from people from diverse cultures, expanding her understanding of sustainable practices.

Returning to Guelph, Mel settled down to raise her beautiful baby boy. However, her thirst for continuous learning led her to make a life-changing decision. Packed with determination and accompanied by her son, she moved to Victoria, BC, on the lands of the Xwsepsum (Esquimalt) and Lekwungen (Songhees) ancestors and families. There, she enrolled in the Sustainable Business program at Royal Roads University, which offered a unique learning experience through project-based and client-based initiatives. Mel gained invaluable hands-on experience in various subject areas, rekindling her passion for change and sparking her interest in working with Indigenous peoples.

Mel’s identity flourished on the West Coast, as she rediscovered her drive for transformation. Eager to engage in creative endeavours and collaborate with Indigenous communities, she found her way to the IISAAK OLAM Foundation. Now, as the Digital Engagement Coordinator for the IPCA Knowledge Basket, Mel is thrilled to contribute to pursuing a conservation economy where Western science and Indigenous knowledge merge to shape a sustainable and wholesome future.

With her diverse experiences, unwavering passion, and commitment to bridging cultures, Mel is poised to make a meaningful impact as she helps pave the way toward a more sustainable and harmonious world.
