Abby Sparling

WEST COAST IPCA CONSERVATION COORDINATOR

Abby is passionate about catalyzing creative and holistic solutions that address complex conservation challenges. She approaches her work with an artistic lens, woven with strong values of reciprocity, and respect and from critical perspectives on political ecology and global environmental governance.

Abby’s background is Northwestern European and she was raised on the lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (Treaty 3). She now lives and works on the land of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples, constantly energized and inspired by the natural abundance of the west coast.

Her MA research (2020) focused on “other effective area-based conservation measures” (OECMs) in Canadian marine conservation policy and investigated the opportunities and constraints introduced by this tool in relation to Indigenous-led conservation. Abby supports community engagement and coordinates projects of the Westcoast IPCA Support Program (WISP).
