IPCAs & Guardians Map

An interactive and publicly-accessible map featuring Indigenous-led conservation initiatives across Canada

Initiative level: National Impact

Project Summary

A Project in the Making
The IISAAK OLAM Foundation (IOF), the Indigenous Leadership Initiative (ILI), and the Conservation through Reconciliation Partnership (CRP) are developing an interactive map that highlights Indigenous-led conservation initiatives across Canada. The map will show the locations and descriptions of Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) and Guardians programs. The location and extent of environmental factors will also be shown, such as carbon stores and biodiversity hot spots.

Only IPCAs and Guardians programs that have agreed to participate will be displayed on the map.

IISAAK Olam's Role

Our role is project management, outreach, and engagement, including the development of a transparent and robust consent process.

Timeline

Fundraising for the project took place in early 2023, with a soft launch in October, and the beginning of the engagement process in November of 2023.

Where it's at now

Our team is continuing to fundraise to be able to add additional layers to the map. We are also in the process of reviewing the consent process and data management plan as well as creating an FAQ page.

Why a map is needed

The future of conservation is Indigenous-led. In the past five years, IPCAs and Guardians have grown exponentially from coast-to-coast-to-coast.  There is increasing interest in both types of initiatives by Indigenous Peoples, Crown governments, NGOs, and others. Despite frequent requests for a map of Indigenous-led conservation initiatives, no publicly available map of IPCAs and Guardians exists. We want to help create a beautiful, informative map that helps showcase the incredible leadership of Indigenous Peoples and showcase the important work communities are doing to take care of the Lands and waters in their territories, for the benefit of all. Together, we can show the momentum and strength of the Indigenous-led conservation movement in Canada.
