The social innovation exchange revolves around exploring how the exchange of two potent models can create resilience in the face of climate change:
Indigenous-led Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCA) Model from Canada:
Indigenous Peoples from Canada lead the charge with a holistic approach to conservation, uniting traditional knowledge, sustainable practices, and community leadership. This model offers Costa Rica fresh avenues for conservation, social integration, and the preservation of our bio-cultural heritage.
Costa Rica’s Payment for Environmental Services (PES) Program: Recognized globally, this program revolutionizes conservation by valuing ecosystem services and involving local communities in safeguarding our natural resources.
Witness the culmination of a project uniting IOF and OTS, dedicated to nurturing and preserving our bio-cultural diversity. With a special focus on the knowledge of medicinal plants held by the Ngäbe indigenous group in Southern Costa Rica, the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives’ project has laid the groundwork for an interpretive trail, and enlightening workshops. With the Ngäbe community at its heart, the project has uncovered 36 indigenous medicinal plants from nearby forests and cultivated a garden of 44 medicinal species. It has kindled cross-cultural dialogues and sparked a Sister Garden Agreement between Costa Rica’s Wilson Botanical Garden and Canada’s Naa’Waya’Sum Coastal Indigenous Gardens. At its core, the mission is to champion ecosystem preservation, and empower indigenous knowledge and cultural systems through reconciliation.
