Astra has been working with IOF since 2022, when she began as a Mitacs intern while completing her MSc in Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria. Since then, she has been assisting on various projects related to mobilizing spatial data products to better serve the interests of Indigenous Peoples. Astra has over a decade of experience working in conservation and restoration, and has worked with First Nations, U.S. Tribes, and Alaska Natives located everywhere from the Arctic to the southwest deserts in the U.S. Her past work has included Impact Benefit management, modernized land use planning, and advising on the use of Traditional Ecological Knowledge in federal policy contexts. Astra is also an award-winning writer who has written about the intersection of people, power and place for publications including the LA Times, Briarpatch, Outside, and many other outlets. She currently resides in Portland, Oregon, located in the territory of the Cowlitz, Multnomah, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Tumwater, Tualatin Kalapuya, Wasco, Molalla, Watlala, Bands of the Chinook, and other peoples of the Nch’i-wána (“The Big River,” aka the Columbia).
